Mission Statement
Often, fishermen and fisheries leave their used nets and traps in the ocean. These nets and traps float around, capturing and killing thousands of innocent marine animals. After several weeks, the nets and traps become so weighed down with dead fish, dolphins, etc., that they slowly sink to the bottom of the sea. Once on the sea bed, it remains there for hundreds of years, as an eerie symbol of our impact upon this earth. Join us today in helping to prevent this crime against nature!
We, the Rancho San Joaquin Middle School QuikSCience team, endeavour to protect the inhabitants of local waters. We have chosen to stop ghost fishing, which occurs when fisheries and fishermen lose or abandon damaged fishing nets and traps in the seas. These lethal "ghost nets" or driftnets, as they are called, suffocate and starve all forms of marine life that drift into the vicinity of its "wall of death." This atrocity is caused by faulty equipment, carelessness, or illegal fisherman cutting their nets loose due to approaching patrol boats. However, this practice can be stopped by raising funds to clean up ghost nets, holding fishermen and fisheries responsible for their equipment, and educating the local community about this. Should the horror of ghost fishing be stopped, we will see as much as a 30% drop in marine debris and pollution, as well as a much healthier ocean and world for future generations to enjoy. Please join us in our quest. Stop Ghost Fishing. Today. A net left today is a life lost tomorrow.
